31st October to 4th November 2022 is Fire Door Safety week, a week to spread awareness and increase public understanding of the vital role that fire doors play in protecting life and property.
Why is there a Fire Safety Week?
The purpose of Fire Safety Week, which was established in 2013, is to raise awareness of the importance of installing fire doors properly and performing routine maintenance checks to ensure they are up to the task. The campaign, which runs from October 31st to November 4th, aims to inform and involve everyone about the proper handling and crucial function of fire doors. Everyone plays their part in ensuring a fire door performs as it should, from the manufacturer through to the building users, and this is why the annual Fire Door Safety Week campaign exists.
Do you understand the different between a fire exit door and a fire door?
A 'fire exit door' are what you could call a 'final exit door.' These can be found on exterior walls of the property and allow people to leave the building and find safety outside, final exit doors may or may not be fire-resistant. The majority of 'fire doors' are internal and are installed and specially designed to withstand fire. Fire doors need to remain closed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. Fire doors need to be regularly inspected to ensure they are fit for purpose, just like all life-saving equipment like fire extinguishers or smoke alarms. Any slight change to the door can affect its performance. Inspections should be performed every six months, or more frequently if it's a high-traffic area.
